Precautions to keep swine flu at bay

(courtesy: Yahoo)

Swine flu in India is spreading like wildfire, taking the toll to six. Officials say there are currently more than 800 cases of the H1N1 flu strain in India. Governments from all around the world are finding ways to combat this deadly disease. So what can you do to protect yourself? Stay calm and practice these 10 effective prevention tips.

1. Wash your hands frequently
Use the antibacterial soaps to cleanse your hands. Wash them often, at least 15 seconds and rinse with running water.

2. Get enough sleep
Try to get 8 hours of good sleep every night to keep your immune system in top flu-fighting shape.

3. Keep hydrated
Drink 8 to10 glasses of water each day to flush toxins from your system and maintain good moisture and mucous production in your sinuses.

4. Boost your immune system
Keeping your body strong, nourished, and ready to fight infection is important in flu prevention. So stick with whole grains, colorful vegetables, and vitamin-rich fruits.

5. Keep informed
The government is taking necessary steps to prevent the pandemic and periodically release guidelines to keep the pandemic away. Please make sure to keep up to date on the information and act in a calm manner.

6. Avoid alcohol
Apart from being a mood depressant, alcohol is an immune suppressant that can actually decrease your resistance to viral infections like swine flu. So stay away from alcoholic drinks so that your immune system may be strong.

7. Be physically active
Moderate exercise can support the immune system by increasing circulation and oxygenating the body. For example brisk walking for 30-40 minutes 3-4 times a week will significantly perk up your immunity.

8. Keep away from sick people
Flu virus spreads when particles dispersed into the air through a cough or sneeze reach someone elseĆ¢€™s nose. So if you have to be around someone who is sick, try to stay a few feet away from them and especially, avoid physical contact.

9. Know when to get help
Consult your doctor if you have a cough and fever and follow their instructions, including taking medicine as prescribed.

10. Avoid crowded areas
Try to avoid unnecessary trips outside. Moreover, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

When the Signal turns Red

There is one thing that every commoner would sympathise with you about and that is traffic jams and having to wait for long for the signal to turn green on the road. This is true, especially in busy metros like Delhi, Mumbai and to a large extent Kolkata. Ok, now honestly tell me what do you do when you find the wait too long? I know a lot of people who start complaining and worse, they abuse and curse! As if all that is going to help them.

Diwali is round the corner, and so you can expect a lot of traffic snarls, jams at every nook and corner, long wait for the signals to turn green and once they are green, by the time you reach ahead, the signal is red again and is so starts the long wait yet again.

Don't get frustrated. Give creativity a chance and see how you make your waits from worthless time wastage to worthwhile time utilisation. Here are some of my ways:

1. Connect to your friends and dear ones. In our day to day lives, often we forget to call our friends and old colleagues and batchmates. This is the time, go ahead! Make them feel that you still remember them and miss those old beautiful days you guys had spend together. This is also a good way to get an update on whose doing what. Don't leave this great opportunity to show your social side.

2. Spend quality time with family, even if you are not travelling with them. You can call up your kids at home and simply lend them your ear. How much time do you get otherwise, to listen to all their little stories, woes and worries? Talk to your spouse, talk about all the beautiful moments you had spent together or how lovely s/he looks in a particular dress. Don't be surprised to see a smiling face opening the door for you, once you get home.

3. Technology has made our lives easy and also entertaining. Plug into your car stereo, your mp3 player, your ipod or anything that can entertain you with your favourite music or videos. However, one word of caution: do not prioritize entertainment over your driving. Concentrate more on the traffic and less on Shakira when she sings "Hips don't lie". Safety on road is much more important than them.

4. Imagine. If you are a daydreamer like me, who can go to any damn world with eyes wide open, and not moving an inch, then here is the golden opportunity. No one to disturb you, no one to bring you back to reality (except the honking cars around you and the traffic signals). This can be quite refreshing sometimes. But hey! do keep an eye on what's happening around you. I mean, don't crash into the car in front of you, even if the driver is hot! ;)

5. Feeling hungry? Is hogging on your mind, first thing when you reach home? Here is the time. Eat! Keep fruits, sandwiches or other dry foods handy. Snack on them, and you would find the red light as nice as tomato ketchup and would want more of it on your nuggets. :)

6. You can talk to your boss. No, I am not out of my minds. Actually this is a good time to update your reporting manager on the work status. This is more applicable in situations where your work area is not the same as your boss'. However, this option is completely based on your discretion. But, again a word of caution: do not call your manager in case you have a serious issue to discuss. While you are behind the wheel, this is certainly not the right time to take up any sensitive topic, be it with anyone.

7. Do you maintain a diary of your daily activities? You can check it at this time. You see how many of your to dos for today are completed, what's in store for the next day. or if you are travelling to work, then you can also see what lies ahead in the day.

8. Festive season is that special time of the year, when the no. of vehicles on roads, increase. And by whose grace I don't know, we have quite a lot of such seasons here in India, where traffic management is something like a fiasco. So you might be visiting friends, relatives, colleagues, acquaintances with gifts and good wishes. So while you are stuck somewhere in the way, why not plan and note down all the visits that you would be making. You can also call some of them and through a tete-e-tete, find out what they would like as gifts.
So basically you are killing many words with one stone. You are not wasting time while waiting, you are making good use of the time, you are connecting with people you know, you are making a good investment of money by buying presents that people would like and you are also creating an win win situation. :)

9. Pamphlets and those little things that you wanted to read but never got the time to. Now is the time. I, sometimes carry a book of short stories, or a small novel, that I start reading whenever I get stuck on the way. And if you know what the traffic scenario in Delhi is, you would know that the stoppage time at every signal is a minimum of 1 minute and can last to more than 5 mins. So with every stoppage, I finish off as much as I can and this way, I complete a book.

10. Pick up things that fell down while the vehicle was on the move. You can not do it while driving, use this time to pick them up and arrange them in order. You can also tidy your car a little if you have cluttered your car with things of importance and of no importance.

Well, these were 10 things that I could think of. Hope this piece helps in making your life a little better. You can also share with me your ideas on making good use of the time when the signal turns red. But, no matter what you choose to do, always maintain and obey traffic rules. I personally feel there are too many in Delhi, but nevertheless, anything for road safety. Right? :)

How to Wait for Your Turn in a Long Queue

Sometimes it becomes very boring and monotonous to keep waiting in a long queue, particularly ones that seem to move very slowly. At times, we feel tempted to yell at the person at the counter to be a little quick, or we simply feel like leaving the line. This becomes all the more painstaking, if our feet are aching, and we long to sit or relax for sometime. Here are some ways to deal with long queues and also feel that the time waiting has been used productively.

Steps

1. Keep a small, thin book handy. You can keep a book with short stories which you can quickly finish while waiting for your turn, or you can keep the paperback version of a novel that you wanted to read, or currently reading.

2. If reading stories or novels is not your cup of tea, you can keep pamphlets, brochures or even the day’s newspaper with you, so that you can catch up with the things that you had to read, but could not find the time to do so, otherwise.

3. If reading is simply not something that you are game for, then you can turn on your iPod for music or videos, or switch to the music folders in your mobile phone and enjoy the music while moving along in the queue.

4. Play phone games. The modern day mobile phones offer a variety of interesting stuff to pass time. For example, the games in your mobile phone can be a good way to keep yourself engaged during the time, which you would have passed getting bored otherwise.

5. Watch TV or ignore it if you find it annoying. In many stores, they have a TV installed near the place where they want people to queue up. Ask the people in charge to turn down the volume if the TV is blaring at you.

6. Catch up on your phone calls. You can also call up your friends and relatives while waiting to go ahead. In our busy lifestyle, we hardly find the time to catch up with friends. This is the perfect time to talk to them and keep in touch.

7. Make friends. If mixing with new people is something that you like, then this is the best place to indulge in it. You can strike up a conversation with the person behind you or in front of you. You can sympathize with each other on how long the wait is – this can be a good ice breaking thing to discuss. However, try to gauge if the person is game for the conversation. If you do not find them contributing much, may be you are just intruding into their personal space.

8. Not just talking, you can also take turns with the person behind you or in front of you to keep each other’s place in the queue secured, so that you can go around again and see if you want something more or would like to exchange something. Or if the wait is very long, you can take turns to sit somewhere, while the other keeps the place. However, make sure that you do not upset anyone in this activity.

9. Bring a snack. Many a time, we forget to eat in our tightly packed schedules. You can use the time in the queue to eat something healthy and filling, so that you keep up with your daily nutrition requirements.

10. Think! Ponder! Reflect! How much time do you get for yourself in a normal day? You always kept somethings for later like your life goals, how you can improve upon something you did not like about yourself, or you have been trying to develop something so how far were you successful; thoughts have no limits and the trail of thoughts can be far more longer than the queue you are in. :)

Tips

  • Try to avoid the line in the first place. Do errands at times of the day which are less busy. Lunch time may be the worst time of day to go to your local post office. If so, plan to go to the post office in the morning. Better yet, bring exact change or a credit card and you may be able to use the machines in the lobby rather than waiting in line.

  • There is so much that you can do to make your waiting in a queue interesting and productive. All you need to do is think about possibilities. This way you can also make good utilization of your time, that you would have wasted otherwise, waiting.

Warnings

  1. Do not attempt to force a conversation with a person, who does not seem to be interested in talking to you. One may not choose to speak due to many reasons, so do not take it personally.

  2. Do not consume hard drinks or do not smoke; it can be very annoying for people around.

  3. Do not talk so loudly that you might disturb everyone else.

Things You'll Need

  • A book

  • Food (preferably some dry food like sandwiches/ nuts)

  • A drink (Juice/ Milk/ Soft Drink)

  • A friend

  • A Positive Attitude
